He's playing violin and saxophone.
He started his music education during high school in Lodz and continued from 1961 in Warsaw in the violin class of Tadeusz Wronski. He taught himself to play the saxophone. First performing with a dixieland band, later with Zbigniew Namyslowski and the Jazz Rockers, with whom he performed during the Jazz Jamboree Festival in 1961. After this, he was invited to play with Andrzej Trzaskowski and toured in the USA in 1962 with his band The Wreckers. After the band split up he moved to Scandinavia from 1965 to 1969 with his wife Urszula. Returning to Poland he formed his self-named Michal Urbaniak Group. They recorded their first international album "Parathypus B" in 1970. During the Montreux '71 Festival he was awarded by the Barklee College of Music in Boston. After many triumphant concerts in Europe and the USA, in May 1973 he played for the last time for a Polish audience and emigrated with his wife and vocalist Urszula Dudziak to the United States. In 1974 he formed the band "Fusion" that also adapted polish folk elements into his music.
He performed with famous artists like Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Benson, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Quincy Jones and Ron Carter. In 1985 he was invited to play during the recording of "Tutu" by Miles Davis. Davis is reported to have said on this occasion: "Get me this fucking Polish fiddler !" He is playing on the track "Don't Lose your Mind".

Urszula Dudziak was born on the 22nd October 1943 in Bielsko-Biala, Poland. She was married to Michal Urbaniak. She is gifted with a remarkable five-octave vocal range. She has worked with artists like Lester Bowie, Bobby McFerrin or Jay Clayton. She also released solo albums from 1972 onwards.

Wojciech Karolak was born on the 28th May 1939 in Warsaw, Poland. In 1958 he started his career in the band "Jazz Believers" playing alto saxophone. Also a member in the band was Krystof Komeda, who later composed the soundtrack for Roman Polanski's movie "Rosemary's Baby" in 1967. His next career station was in The Wreckers (among Michal Urbaniak) playing tenor saxophone now. In 1961 he switched back to piano. 1962 he formed his own band. In 1964 he was the first musician to release a Jazz LP in Poland with his band "Kurylewicz Quintet" (LP "Go Right").
He left Poland in 1966 and moved to Sweden and played in Rock and Blues groups, as he said to make enough money to buy an appartment and a Hammond B-3 organ, which he did in 1973.

Constellation

(No PW)radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-52949322686257576442007-06-26T17:20:00.000+02:002007-06-26T17:25:18.001+02:00
COLOR - ÚJ SZINEK (1982)
Hungarian Progressive, MP3 @ 224

Color

(No PW)radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-41923987825446368962007-02-16T10:43:00.000+01:002007-02-16T10:59:51.026+01:00

SEBESTYÉN MÁRTA

She was born on the 19th August 1957 in Budapest, Hungary. She learned how to sing before she even knew how to speak. Márta speaks seven languages fluently !
Her mother, Ilona Farkas, a music teacher and collector of folksongs, was a pupil of Kodály Zoltán (a famous hungarian composer). At the age of 6 she already recorded an album. She quited her studies at the Budapester Art Academy in 1975 to spend more time with singing. She began to sing at the "Táncház" (House of Dance). A movement used as a form of protest against the cultural oppression of the Communist government. Students, musicians and dancers began to explore their hungarian musical roots. This movement became very popular to the whole generation of students and intellectuals of Budapest. Though she said in an interview that she only sang the songs because of their beauty and not because of political reasons. She was impressed by the power of the music that pulled people together. Around 1980 she joined the music group "Muzsikás", with them she recorded albums through the years. In the beginning of the 1990's she gave worldwide concerts with them.

In 1995 two french gentlemen, Eric Mouquet and Michael Sanchez, better known as "Deep Forest" were listening to records from all over the world. They phoned each other one day and said they'd found something wonderful, and then they realized they both were listening to the same songs. It were the songs of Sebestyén Márta. They were very impressed and sent her a demo tape, asking her what she thinks about it. Her reaction, taken from an interview, was: "It was really shocking to me and strange to my ears. But I tried to forget about being a folk singer and listened to it the way a young teenager would listen. There are so many ways to reach an audience, so I let them use it and we became friends". "People sometimes like to use my voice in pop music, it is never my idea. When I am able to do what I want to do, to say what I want to say, it is always through folk music. Ordinary people who listen to music on the radio all day to not know it is all lie. It is noise, the noise of money. I pity people who have grown up never having heard honest music. Mixing music with business is not for me".
So her voice can be heard on Deep Forest's album "Boheme". One of the songs, "Marta's Song" also appeared on Robert Altman's "Pret-a-Porter" soundtrack.
In 1996 another international success, in the movie "The English Patient" a traditional Hungarian song can be heard under the opening credits, "Én csak azt csodálom" (Lullaby for Catherine). Another of her songs used in the movie is "Szerelem szerelem" (Love, Love).
She also sang for the Japanese emperor and the Spanish King. She also received every prize a Hungarian artist can receive. Her repertoir also includes folk songs from Ireland, Greece, Bulgaria, Bosnia or even Indian Hindu songs.

radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-43451901603163686062007-02-16T10:32:00.000+01:002007-02-16T10:42:42.096+01:00

SEBESTYÉN MÁRTA - DÚDOLTAM ÉN (1987)
Hungarian Folk, MP3 @ 192

Dúdoltam én

password: radiowaves66

radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1167692017609385112007-01-01T23:48:00.000+01:002007-01-22T04:48:59.490+01:00
BLUE EFFECT & JAZZ Q PRAHA - CONIUNCTIO (1970)
Czech Prog/Jazz Rock, MP3 @ 224

Blue Effect

password: radiowaves66
radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1167626548475575802007-01-01T05:29:00.000+01:002007-01-01T05:42:28.486+01:00

LOCOMOTIV GT - A LOCOMOTIV GT ÖSSZES KISLEMEZE (1971-1984)
Hungarian Prog, MP3 @ 224

01-Ha volna szived (1971)
02-Boldog vagyok (1971)
03-Érints meg (1971)
04-Segits elaludni (1973)
05-Hej,gyere velem (1973)
06-Csak egy szóra (1972)
07-Csavargók angyala (1973)
08-Szeress nagyon (1972)
09-Mindig csak ott várok rád (1973)
10-Miénk ez a cirkusz (1979)
11-Veled,csak veled (1979)
12-Annyi mindent nem szerettem még (1979)
13-Pokolba már a szép szavakkal (1979)
14-Kinn is vagyok,benn is vagyok (1984)
15-Segits nekem (1984)
16-Már nem vigyázol ránk (1984)

Pt.1
Pt.2

(No split archives ! He heard them at "10c. house
parties" which would take place most every week-end out in the country.
Someone whould hire a piano player and find an empty house, charge 10c.
admission and the party was under way. Others would bring food and sell
it together with beer and moonshine. The piano player amde perhaps $1.50
for playing all night but as Mercy Dee says: "A dollar was a great thing
in those days". These parties would start on a friday night - go on all
day saturday and all that night until sunday. Usually during the course
of a week-end you could hear four or five different piano players. One of
these players was a man named Delois Maxey and he left a strong influence
on Mercy Dee. He never made any records but everyone around Waco knew him
as one of the best piano players.

Mercy Dee came to California before the second World War and moved around
from Los Angeles through the Central Valley to Oakland and San Francisco,
playing mostly for the farm workers who knew his kind of blues. After the
War, with large numbers of independent small record labels appearing like
wild-flowers all over the country, an enterprising Chinese-American named
Chester Lu contracted Mercy Dee to make some records. Spire was the name
of his label and the two discs by Mercy Dee were the extent of his
catalogue. But the records got around and other newly-founded labels
specializing in "Rhythm and Blues" heard of Mercy Dee and soon his records
were appearing on two or three different labels. When his hit records of
"One Room Country Shack" broke all over the country, Mercy Dee became a
full-time musician and entertainer.

Mercy Dee Walton died in 1962.

Mercy Dee Walton

password: radiowaves66radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1166471011779811442006-12-18T20:36:00.000+01:002007-02-02T12:13:02.500+01:00
BLIND SNOOKS EAGLIN - THAT'S ALL RIGHT (1961)
US Blues, MP3 @ 224

Sometimes billed as "Ford", more often as "Snooks", blind singer-guitarist
Fird Eaglin Jr. has been a profilic New Orleans rhythm and blues recording
artist for over three decades. At this 1961 session, he moved easily from moaning the down-home
"I'm a Country Boy" to shouting the Ray Charles R&B hit "I Got a Woman".
Wheter drawing his material from anonymous folk sources, the delta blues of
Big Boy Crudup and Tommy McClennan, the city blues of St. Louis Jimmy, Tampa
Red and Washboard Sam, or more contemporary jukebox favourites, Eaglin, in the
words of recordist Harry Oster, "transforms them all into something
characteristically his own".

Blind Snooks Eaglin

password: radiowaves66radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1166362539535334392006-12-17T14:21:00.000+01:002006-12-30T17:14:56.490+01:00
OMEGA - DAS DEUTSCHE ALBUM (1972/73)
Hungarian Progressive, MP3 @ 128

Hungarian Prog-legends Omega also recorded a couple of songs sung in german.
In 1972 they were discovered by the german producer Peter Hauke,
who got them a contract with the label "Bacillus" for 3 years. Almost nothing is said about their history and the only thing we have from them is a fresh, enthousiastic, atypical jazzy rock album dominated by raw, aggressive guitars and progressive "folk" arrangements. Nosferatu belongs to this kind of German bands who success to create a deep and trippy atmosphere thanks to fine moments of long instrumental solos, crossing with an original touch guitars to sax, flute and electric organs. Her uncle, Tang Chujen Gui, is a master player of
the erhu and from a very young age she studied under him.
At the age of 12 she entered the "Central Conservatory of Music
in China" in Beijing where she remained until she was 22,
turning from a student into a professor. When she was 14 years
old the Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa was visiting the
Conservatory for listening to classical chinese music. Despite
her age she was selected to perform for Ozawa. Ozawa, although
of Japanese parentage was born in Manchuria China, was very
touched by the music of his birthplace and the emotional
sensitivity of her playing. At the same age she also joined
that Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on their tour to Australia,
New Zealand and Hong Kong.
Another turning point in her life occurred in November 1976,
when one of the world's premier orchestras, the Berlin
Philharmonic, under Herbert Von Karajan, visited China for the
first time. After their concert she performed for the orchestra
at a party, she played one of the most difficult classical pieces
for violin, Pablo de Sarasate's Gypsy piece "Zigeunerweisen" and
at the end of the performance, the principle violinist was
completely astonished by her technical dexterity and her new
arrangement to suit the two stringed erhu. He invited her to
Berlin to learn the violin which she decided not to do, but to
continue playing the erhu.
In 1988, the Berlin Philharmonic invited her again to Berlin,
to play an erhu concerto with the full orchestra, conducted by
Seiji Ozawa. Herbert Von Karajan, was sick at that time, but was
much looking forward to hearing this very special performance.
Sadly Karajan died on the same day and the whole performance
turned into a tribute for the conductor.
Jiang Jian Hua is also the person who performed the erhu on
Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack to Bernardo Bertolucci's movie
"The Last Emperor" in 1987. Her haunting improvisation passages
were the soundtracks most memorable moments.

The performances on this album were made with the China Broadcast
Chinese National Orchestra conducted by Wu Hou Yuan and the
Youth Chinese Music Ensemble of Central Conservatory of Music in
China conducted by Wang Fu Jian. Recorded in March 1996 at
China Record, 2nd Studio in Beijing.

Jiang Jian Hua
pw:radiowaves66
radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1160334809716440122006-10-08T20:59:00.000+02:002006-10-10T16:39:58.403+02:00 MASAMI TSUCHIYA - RICE MUSIC (1982)
Japanese Avantgarde/Wave, MP3 @ 224

Rice Music is Masami Tsuchiya's (ex-Ippu Do) debut solo album.
A multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, drums,
synthesizers, percussion, koto, yokin and sings on this album.
The cover might be misleading because Masami is male.
(In a stewardess costume ?) But anyway this kind of look wasn't
strange in the 80's. Just remember David Sylvian's Wave band
"Japan" whose members Mick Karn (bass) and Steve Jansen (drums)
appear as guest musicians on this record. Just as Bill Nelson
(guitars) and Percy Jones (bass). Also remarkable: a young Ryuichi
Sakamoto performing all instruments (besides the guitars, which
is played by Masami himself) on the track "Kafka".
This album has lots of traditional Japanese elements mixed with
electronics.
The lyrics are mainly in Japanese, but also some english passages
or even songs.
Oh and Masami Tsuchiya is not to be confused with the person of
the same name, who was sentenced to death due his role in the Sarin
gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995.
Masami Tsuchiya
pw:radiowaves66
radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30758287.post-1160330454259203642006-10-08T19:54:00.000+02:002006-10-10T16:41:11.746+02:00
KOVÁCS KATI - KOVÁCS KATI (1973)
Feat.LOCOMOTIV GT & ADAMIS ANNA
Hungarian Rock, MP3 @ 224

Kovács Kati's third album, on which she is backed by Locomotiv GT.
The songs were penned by LGT members, the lyrics are by Adamis Anna.
If you liked the LGT albums I posted here before then you
should check this one out as well.Three of the tracks were later
re-recorded by LGT on their albums.
Kovács Kati 1973
pw:radiowaves66
radiowaveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06233401752517121672noreply@blogger.com10
