SPLENDEUR DES INSTRUMENTS
JAPONAIS (2002)
3 CD BOX SET
MP3 @ 192

Each of the three CDs in this set is devoted to an
important Japanese instrument:
The SHAMISEN, a long-necked lute with three
strings, arrived in Japan from China at the end
of the sixteenth century. Is is used for popular
music, as well as for theatrical forms.
The works on this recording presents the
many styles of music that are played on
the SHAMISEN.
The SHAKUHACHI, an end-blown notched
flute with five finger-holes, was imported to
Japan from China in the eighth century.
Typical of the SHAKUHACHI is the fact that
it enables the player to imitate other sounds,
such as animal and insect noises and the
sighing of the wind.
The KOTO, which arrived in Japan from China
at just before the beginning of the eighth century,
is a long zither with movable frets. Its body is
made of kiri wood (Paulownia imperialis) and
the most common type has thirteen strings, but
there are also instruments with seventeen, twenty,
or even thirty strings. The father of modern koto
playing was Yatsuhashi Kengyo (1614-1685), one
of whose compositions is heard on this album.
The finest exponents of each of these three
instruments demonstrate the beauty of their
repertoires - music full of the serene atmosphere
we associate with the Land of the Rising Sun.

ANCIENT CHINA MELODIES
MP3 @ 320, Vinyl Rip

Ancient China Melodies was performed by the
Grand Chinese Orchestra conducted by Cheng
Si-Sum. Sadly I do not have any information

been re-issued on CD.
The album contains 3 pieces, for more information
about them please read the sleevenotes which I
added in a txt file to the archive.
Ripped from vinyl, so no crystal-clear quality,

V'MOTO ROCK -
V'MOTO ROCK II. (1980)
(HUNGARIAN POP/ROCK)
MP3 @ 224, Vinyl Rip)

Again requested by Johnny.

V'Moto Rock was formed in 1977 by songwriter/singer/bass player Ferenc Demjén. He already had successful carreer behind him with bands like Dogs (1967/68), Meteor (1969) and Bergendy (1970-77).
V'Moto Rock played more mainstream pop/rock. The band broke up around 1988. Demjén was (and is still) a very successful solo artist. He wrote songs for many hungarian artists and appeared as a guest musician.
To be honest I don't really like the sound of this band, the keyboards can be kinda annoying. I only post this because it was requested. But ok maybe others like it too :-)

As requested by Johnny.

The Band was formed in 1975 by Lajos Som (bass, ex-Neoton, ex- Taurus) who decided to form a hard rock band after seeing Black Sabbath live. He found followers in Miklós Köves (drums) and János Závodi (guitars)(both ex-Non-Stop), Péter Gallai (lead vocals, keyboards) and 2nd lead vocalist Sándor Révész (ex-General), whose voice sometimes remind me of Robert Plant. Though the band played hard rock, this album contains

a 10 min. long instrumental piece that can be filed under progressive.

Recorded at ABC Studios in Los Angeles 1974, produced by Jimmy Miller.
Jimmy Miller also contributed lead vocals on the song "Angel of Hobos".
This is actually not much progressive. It is a "funky" rock album.
Remastered from the original tapes in 1987 and released in 1988.

LOCOMOTIV GT
Locomotiv GT was formed January 1971 in Budapest by ex-OMEGA member Gábor Presser (vocals, organ, piano) and Károly Frenreisz (bass, saxophones, flute) (ex-METRO), both leaving their bands because they want to play a new kind of music. Tamás Barta (ex-HUNGARIA) on guitars. Presser can convince OMEGA drummer József Laux to join his new band, Laux's wife Anna Adamis (lyric writer, also from OMEGA) becomes the fifth member in LGT. OMEGA found in László Benkö (organ, synthesizers) and Ferenc Debreceni (drums) new members and the classic 2nd line-up was born, which still remains the same. The change in the band also opened new directions, their sound became more harder and they recorded remarkable progressive rock albums. But that's another story, back to LGT...
They give their debut concert in July 1971, in September their first single was released ("Boldog vagyok" / "Ha volna szived"). In November they perform at the "World Popular Song Festival" in Tokyo, Japan. A month later their debut LP "Locomotiv GT" is out. They gain international success, Mai 1972 performing at the "Great Western Express Festival" in England. Autumn '72 the second album "Ringasd el magad" was released. This was the last album with Frenreisz, he is leaving to form a new group (SKORPIO, a band that will play more hard rock), he was replaced by Tamás Somló who gives his debut with the band on the 3rd album "Bummm (1973). In 1974 the band is touring in the USA, in Los Angeles they record an album, which was only released in 1988. Their 4th hungarian album "Mindig magasabbra" (1975) was recorded after another line-up change: Barta is leaving, new guitar player is János Karácsony. 1976 release of the double album "LGT V." which contains fake live recordings on the fourth record side (studio recordings overdubbed with applause). In the same year Laux is moving to the US, the new drummer is János Solti, who plays on the 1977 album "Mindenki másképp csinálja-Zene". This last line up (Presser, Somló, Karácsony & Solti) will remain until the end of the 90's. As far as I know the band is still active (not sure about the current line-up)and each member released solo albums. The music style is hard to discribe since they mixed many music styles. The early works are more progressive, but different to the sound of OMEGA.
I will post the early albums here so make your own oppinion ! Please leave your thoughts, doesn't matter if they're positive or negative. Thanks !
BERGENDY - ÖTÖDIK SEBESSÉG (1974)
(HUNGARIAN PROG/JAZZ ROCK)
MP3 @ 224, Vinyl Rip)

Formed in the early 60's by the brothers
István and Péter Bergendy. Back then the
band played jazz/swing but also rock 'n'
roll. 1969/1970 the band decides to play
more rock (influenced by Chicago, Yes
and Deep Purple). 1971 finally their debut
album was released. The Band is still
active. This is their 3rd album.

ATTENTION ! Ripped from vinyl, don't expect excellent quality !
Anyway recommended !

SYRIUS - DEVIL'S MASQUERADE
(HUNGARIAN PROG/JAZZ ROCK) (1972)
(MP3 @ 224, Vinyl Rip)

A short biography: Syrius was formed in 1962,
performing Beat Music. In 1966 they won the
first price at the "Pol Beat" Festival with their
song "Fekete patkány" (Black rat). In 1967
their single "Tranzisztori" becomes a bit hit,
which also wins prices at various Beat Festivals.
In 1970 they're performing at the Montreaux
Jazz Festival. Same year they get invited to
Australia by the producer Charlie Fischer.
They recorded most of their material in Australia
(just as this album). Syrius disbanded in the
late 70's.

ATTENTION ! This album was ripped from an
original 1972 record, which is sadly in a bad
condition, but doesn't "jump".
Anyway I really recommend this album !

VARIOUS ARTISTS: FAMILY CIRCLE-FAMILY TREE

THE LOST - CHAMAELEON CHURCH - THE BAGATELLE - ULTIMATE SPINACH III - BOOM BOOM BAND
(1965-1978)

(US-PSYCHEDELIC) (MP3 @ 224, Artwork included)

The Lost was formed 1964 by Ted Myers (vocals, guitars), Willie Alexander (vocals, organ), Walter Powers (bass) while they were attending Goddard College in Vermont. They later moved to Boston and added Kyle Garrahan (vocals, lead guitars) and Lee Mason (drums). (Walter Powers and Willie Alexander joined The Velvet Underground in 1971 under Doug Yule, replacing Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison). The Lost sides here are from an unreleased collection of their Capitol recordings made between August and December 1965, with the exception of a few A & B-sides of three singles they put out in 1965 and 1966.

Chamaeleon Church was formed by Lost co-founder Ted Myers in early 1968 after The Lost broke up. He brought in Lost co-member Kyle Garrahan, the folk artist Tony Scheuren (vocals, guitars) and Chevy Chase (vocals, drums, piano). The band was located in New York and only recorded one album in late 1968 / early 1969 before disbanding. Chevy Chase later became a famous comedian/actor. (He also featured in Paul Simon's videoclip to "You can call me Al", 1986).

The Bagatelle was started as a trio by The Lost drummer Lee Mason and was expanded by the legendary producer Tom Wilson (Dylan, Zappa) into an interracial group of nine members which included flute player Steve Schrell. The Lost co-founder Willie Alexander later joined the band and recorded two songs in 1968. One of them "Everybody Knows", was already recorded with the Lost in 1965, Alexander recorded this song for the third time in 1978 with his Boom Boom Band (all three versions are included in this compilation).

Ultimate Spinach III was formed 1968 with Barbara Jean Hudson on vocals (who recorded on the first Ultimate Spinach albums already), Russ Levine on drums (he already recorded with the second Spinach group), Tony Scheuren (vocals, guitars, ex-Chamaeleon Church), Mike Levine (bass) and the great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (lead guitars, ex-Faith). After Ultimate Spinach broke up Baxter went on to play with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers. Ted Myers moved to California to pursue a songwriting career before becoming an A&R Director. Two cuts from the Spinach III on this album: "Back Door Blues" (with Baxter on vocals), a song Ted Myers originally wrote and recorded three years earlier for The Lost and the song "Happiness, Child" (with Tony Scheuren on vocals), which Ted originally also wrote for The Lost, demo-recorded it with Chamaeleon Church and finally master-recorded with Ultimate Spinach III.
